NORTHERN SOUL LECTURE:

• Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960s from the British mod scene, based on a particular style of black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo.
• Soul music of a typically upbeat style that was particularly popular in parts of northern England during the 1960/70s. 

WHAT DID A MOD LOOK LIKE?

• Mod is a subculture that began in London in 1958 and spread throughout Great Britain and elsewhere, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries, and continues today on a smaller scale.
• The original mod scene was associated with amphetamine-fuelled all-night dancing at clubs.

• Rockers generally favoured 1950s rock and roll, mostly by artists like Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent.
• Mods listened to 1960s ska music, soul and R&B, as well as British bands such as The Who, The Yardbirds and The Kinks.
• Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice are anti-racist skinheads who oppose neo-fascists and other political racists, particularly if those racists identify themselves as skinheads.
• The Human League are an English synth-pop band formed in Sheffield in 1977, same year Soft Cell formed but in Leeds. Initially an experimental electronic outfit, the group signed to Virgin Records in 1979 and later attained widespread commercial success with their third album Dare in 1981.
